RIVERS

I have been fascinated by water and rivers and have focused on them in so much of my work. This results from a love of water itself and its ability to exist in three states, as well as from an environmental point of view: Water is the most critical element on earth and one that we are severely depleting and polluting. Part of my interest in rivers has been formal; I see these natural phenomena as drawings and have been tracing their intricate forms in both two- and three-dimensional works that capture and reveal the river as a single connected ecosystem, especially and quite literally with the pieces made of recycled silver. I have focused on the need to see rivers as precious, jewel-like forms. We generally under- stand big rivers in a local context, at the places where we encounter them in our immediate surroundings; rarely do we see them as interconnected wholes. I have tried to make the viewer aware of these incredibly important waterways that are vital yet often over- looked as complete systems.

EXHIBITIONS

These exhibitions are integrally connected to my larger outdoor installations; there is a constant back-and- forth between the two modes. Because the pieces created for these indoor exhibitions are generally smaller in scale, this often allows me the freedom to fabricate them myself. In turn, these smaller works have then led me to expand my ideas on a larger scale for outdoor projects, which by necessity are planned, drawn, and modeled in a way that keeps me slightly removed from the actual making of the work. The outdoor pieces have then led me back inside, to explore at a different size some of the environmental qualities of my large-scale works.

Utilizing the way in which scientists and computers see our world, drawing on images from sonar views of the ocean floor to aerial and satellite views of the land, I have focused on creating artworks that translate that technological view into sculptural forms. In so doing, I have begun to create works that present a somewhat systematized view of natural phenomena.
